Lone heron
turns its back on the ice
catching sunrays 訳/ 背を向けて 氷上の鷺陽を受ける動作を途中で止めたまま、凍りついたように動かない鷺、…。一瞬、向きを変えた！何で？欧米では「俳句とは a moment of awareness、 a mild shock の詩」といわれるが、この俳句はまさに、その典型。３行目がオチ、起・承・転・結の結に相当する。

The Red Maple Leaf
In the dying autumn twilight
Refuses to fall 訳/ 黄昏や落下を拒む楓の葉作者の素直で明快な観察力がすばらし。カナダ国旗の象徴である「maple leaf」の用法が俳句に深く多用な意味を与えている。

a cooling blue
in the window 訳/ 涼しさや入江のボート窓になし部屋にくつろいで、静謐な入江を眺めている。窓は透明で、入江の青そのものだ。うるさいボートが一つもない。
